I can hear you already saying no way!   Go on, give them a try, you might be pleasantly suprised!!!

The first time I ever ate bugs was in Zimbabwe, quite a few years ago where Mopane Worms (caterpillars) were on the menu.

These worms or caterpillars having been collected by hand were degutted, boiled in salted water and sun-dried, then fried and served in a small bowl.  They were quite chewy and hard but too salty and gritty for my liking. I must say I did try them more than once to give them the benefit of the doubt, definitely not my cup of tea!

Now recently in Uganda I have discovered a delicacy that I can’t wait to tuck into again on my next safari and that is Termites!!! They are absolutely delicious and incredibly nutritious too.  I wasn't convinced at first either................

The large termites, which take flight after the first rains at the end of the dry season, come out in droves and are attracted to the lights. Africans beat the ground around the termite hills to simulate heavy rain, provoking the termites to emerge.

We were brought a whole bag of termites which our host cooked for us. I was a little apprehensive, so I just took one at first and popped it in, well ................. it was divine and seconds later we were filling our hands full of these tasty morsels and cramming them into our mouths.  MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A lovely accompaniment to the freshly cooked bamboo shoots cooked in peanut sauce and matoke bananas.

The nearest taste that I can compare them with is the crispy roasted skin of a chicken, they were totally scrumptious and you just needed a glass of water handy to wash down all the stray legs every so often.  Hehehehehehehehe............  Now I can’t wait for the next time that we head off to Uganda and get stuck into some bugs!
