Let us share with you the heart and magic of this exhilarating yet mysterious continent. On this epic Ugandan adventure you will visit some of the more rural locations in this breath-taking country. Camp on a private island in the mighty Nile River, take a tour of some of the local villages on foot. Explore the scenic Lake Mburo National Park and take in the peace and tranquillity of Mpanga Forest Reserve.
Day 1 - Friday - Depart London
We suggest that you depart from London Heathrow Airport with Qatar Airways at 2130hrs.
Day 2 - Saturday - Arrival Entebbe
It is here that our safari begins, upon arrival into Entebbe International Airport at 1305hrs, Safari Joe will meet you and just a short drive away is our campsite, situated in a quiet tropical suburb. Entebbe is located on the vast shores of Lake Victoria, the world's second largest freshwater body, shared between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Day 3 - Sunday - Entebbe to Jinja
Leaving the sleepy shores of Entebbe we head into Kampala, the economic and social hub of Uganda, built across seven hills; although they lie only 40km apart, the twin cities of Kampala and Entebbe, (present and former capital of Uganda respectively) could scarcely be more different in character. After a quick stop in Kampala we are soon out onto the open roads through rural towns and villages, on our drive we will pass by vast tea and coffee estates and sugar cane plantations along the roadside before we reach Jinja where we will spend the night at the Backpackers.
Day 4 - Monday - Jinja to Budadiri
Departing from Jinja and beginning our drive towards Mbale, we soon pass rural Ugandan villages, small towns and roadside markets. Mbale nestled in the foothills of Mt Elgon is where we start our drive up the mountain to the small trading centre of Budadiri and Roses Last Chance. A delicious dinner prepared by Rose will be waiting for our arrival.
Day 5 - Tuesday - Budadiri
Today is a free day to explore the area and visit the Sironko Demonstration School. You can visit the market, an interesting area in this mountain community. There will be plenty of free time to wander around and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this friendly town.
Day 6 - Wednesday - Budadiri
A free day to spend with Rose enjoying the hospitality and relaxation at the campsite, there will be the chance to learn how to make some mandazi, chapati and other local food for our feast tonight, including a spit roast pig!
Day 7 - Thursday - Jinja (Bujagali)
We bid farewell to Rose and head back down the mountain towards the bustling town of Jinja, Uganda fourth largest town. Jinja, has an attractively lush location on the northern shore of Lake Victoria above the Ripon Falls, identified by Speke in 1862 as the Source of the Nile (Victoria Nile), but later submerged following the construction of the Owen Falls Dam; the River Nile is the world longest river, flowing for 6,650km and it is from here that it begins its journey north into the Mediterranean in Egypt. We camp alongside the Nile River in full view of the scenic Lake Bujagali; our campsite is surrounded by picturesque villages.
Day 8 - Friday - Jinja (Bujagali)
There will be plenty of opportunities to interact with the friendly locals and learn a little about their way of life. There will also be time for participating in the optional activities of white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, horse riding and quad biking in the local village or bungee jumping. If you are after a more relaxing time, you can just sit back and watch the local fishermen glide by in their dug-out canoes and enjoy the huge variety of birdlife in camp.
Day 9 - Saturday - Jinja (Bujagali)
Later in the afternoon when it is cooler we will head off on foot into the villages on a guided walk, gaining an insight into a traditional Ugandan rural way of life, we will learn about how the food is grown, harvested and stored, how the local brews are prepared, usually many children accompany us hand in hand on this walk proud to show off their homesteads, at the end of our visit we are spoilt with a delicious Ugandan meal.
Day 10 - Sunday - Jinja to Hairy Lemon Island
Departing Bujagali we head into Jinja for a day of shopping, stocking up, email, eating and drinking!! There will be plenty of opportunity to explore this fantastic town, the market, shops etc. If you would like to get local clothes made or shop for curios it is also a great opportunity to do so here. Early afternoon we depart for a short drive up to Hairy Lemon Island where we will cross over to the island by canoe.
Day 11 & 12 - Monday & Tuesday - Hairy Lemon Island
Wake up and enjoy life on the Island, two free days of relaxing and exploring. There are plenty of places to take a swim, play some ball games or simply put your feet up and chill. Tuck into the scrumptious meals served in the restaurant and enjoy the peaceful starlit evenings. There will also be chance to go fishing, relax in the infinity pool and play water volleyball.
Day 13 - Wednesday - Hairy Lemon to Mpanga Forest
Crossing back to the mainland and heading back down to Jinja we drive back through Kampala, we will stop and shop on the way. Once we have passed through we are back on the open roads and heading west to Mpanga Forest Reserve. The reserve protects an extensive patch of rainforest. With over 180 species of birds and many species of butterflies and trees, on foot we follow the excellent network of forest trails with our experienced guide, where we will learn about the many medicinal values of the plants and trees, and identify some of the colourful species of birds and butterflies.
Day 14 - Thursday - Mpanga Forest to Lake Mburo National Park
As shafts of light penetrate the overhead canopy of trees we are awoken by a chorus of birds signalling the break of dawn. We depart for Lake Mburo National Park, passing vast Papyrus Swamps and the Drum Markets. We also cross the Equator on our drive today, where will make a stop to observe the natural phenomenon of water passing through a funnel! Arriving during the afternoon in the National Park we will make our way to our camp situated near the shore of the lake.
Day 15 - Friday - Lake Mburo National Park
A full day exploring this unique National Park including: game drives, guided walks and a motorboat trip on the lake. The park supports a healthy concentration of wildlife including impala, zebra, waterbuck, topi, buffalo, sitatunga, hippo, eland, baboons, hyena, leopard, jackal and otters.
One of the highlights is a guided walk with an armed ranger and a boat cruise. The park is also excellent for bird watching with over 300 species recorded.
Day 16 - Saturday - Lake Mburo to Kampala
After breakfast we depart Lake Mburo and head back to the lively capital of Kampala in time to get changed and enjoy a fun Saturday night at the Backpackers!
Day 17 Sunday - Kampala to Entebbe
A relaxed morning in camp, after brunch we will drive to Entebbe in time to meet your evening flight home. Departure from Entebbe Airport with Qatar Airways is 1750hrs.
Day 18 Monday - Entebbe to London
Arrival back into London Heathrow is 0715hrs.
